In focus: added value of vacancy activation
The “Circular Potentials” symposium focuses on the economic, ecological and socio-cultural added value created by the activation of vacant properties.
Vacancy activation and temporary use offer opportunities to meet the challenges of contemporary urban development on several levels. Current project examples from several European cities show the diversity of uses and possibilities that can unfold in these potential spaces.
Hybrid experimental and work spaces, event and meeting spaces can be found in the activated buildings and accessible areas. As places of social innovation, as an economic factor and as a driver of transformation, they provide new impetus both in the existing city and in urban development areas. Intensified use of existing buildings also supports the sustainable use of spatial resources and the built environment.
Procedure and program
The program includes exciting keynote speeches, in-depth panel sessions, excursions and a public panel discussion on the topic of Circular Potentials – added value of vacancy activation. The symposium will take place as a hybrid event on site and partly as an online stream.
What makes a project successful? What added value does it create for the existing city and for urban development areas? What instruments can be used to measure these? How can they be presented or quantified?
On Day 1, these questions will be the focus of both the keynote speeches and the subsequent panel sessions for the invited experts from the fields of urban administration, the real estate industry, spatial planning companies, research and science.
The keynote speeches by representatives of exciting projects from Vienna, Bremen (D), Berlin (D), St.Gallen (CH), Riga (LVA) and Ebeltoft (DK) will be available as a stream and also afterwards for all interested parties.
On day 2, we will visit current temporary use projects in Vienna, making the topic tangible and accessible. The event will conclude on Thursday evening with a public panel discussion on Vienna’s approach to vacancy activation and temporary use. This event will be streamed online. The videos of the keynote speeches and panel discussion will be available live and online afterwards.

Kreative Räume Wien has been providing free advice, networking and support for vacancy activation and interim use on behalf of the City of Vienna since 2016. The service and advice center advises both owners of vacant rooms, buildings and spaces as well as creative space seekers. Another focus is on networking and public relations work as well as raising awareness on the topics of vacancy activation and avoidance, interim use and cooperative use concepts. Every two years, Kreative Räume Wien organizes a symposium in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency.
