There is some great news. The art initiative Never At Home is moving into over 70 rooms in the ORF Funkhaus in Argentinierstraße, the Rooming Inn project is opening in the 22nd district, Vienna Art Week is just around the corner and there are currently two submission deadlines. One for vacancy activation in the 2nd and 20th districts and one for innovative spaces for creative use. But first things first.
Moved in: Never At Home in the Funkhaus

The cultural initiative Never At Home moves into two floors of the former ORF broadcasting center in the 4th district. Centrally located, 73 studio spaces are available for visual artists, musicians and creative people from all disciplines in Austria’s largest and oldest broadcasting center. The first users will move in tomorrow, and exhibitions, events and workshops are also planned.
While the Never At Home association will use the first and second floors of the listed 1930s building until probably summer 2025, the Wiener Festwochen will occupy the ground floor, the basement, the third floor and various open spaces – and proclaim the ‘Republic of Love’ here in June 2025. The ORF will continue to use parts of the building for the ORF RadioKulturhaus and the Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Funding: Grätzlinitiative 20+2/Call

Do you want to revitalize a vacant space in the 20th or 2nd district with your project? Then watch out now: The WieNeu+ urban renewal program and the Business Agency are looking for innovative space utilization concepts for lively ground floor zones in the 20+2 project area. Preference will be given to concepts that revitalize street-side premises. Small businesses, cooperatives, start-ups and associations can receive up to 50 percent of the rental costs for three years (maximum 12,000 euros per year).
How does it work? Submit a project idea for a utilization concept in the ground floor zone for Grätzl 20+2 by email. A jury will decide and the winners will then have until the end of April 2025 to rent the vacant space. In addition to the assumption of rental costs, there are support offers such as the formation of room communities and support from imGrätzl.at. We like!
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 15, 2024

Discuss: Use vacancies!

A new, broad alliance has formed in Vienna to combat vacancies. In the run-up to the 2025 municipal elections, IG Architektur and numerous cooperation partners are calling for a uniform definition, vacancy surveys, mandatory reporting and other measures to revitalize vacant properties. Building on the list of demands, which was developed together with experts from architecture, administration and civil society, the alliance is organizing three public events to discuss the issue in greater depth. A publication on the topic is also due to appear next year. In addition to vacancies in residential buildings, the focus is also on the ground floor zone and commercial buildings. Of course we will be there!
Uli Fries from Kreative Räume Wien will discuss the topic of vacancies in the first floor zone together with Patricia Anderle (municipal councilor), Sabine Lutz (MA18 Stadtentwicklung Stadt Wien), Christian Peer (Senior Scientist at TU Wien, futurelab), Anna Theresa Renner (TU Wien) on Friday, November 8 at the old WU.
The discussion will be moderated by Robert Temel, architecture and urban researcher, Platform for Building Culture Policy.

Read more: Transformative practices for vacancy activation

News from science! Three projects in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna will be used to show how users of pioneering projects can be actively involved in transformative urban development processes. It is essential to dovetail bottom-up and top-down approaches and to create framework conditions in which cooperative urban development becomes possible.
