A new interim use is being created in Liesing. Over the next three years, the former barrel factory will become a place of research for sustainable construction, building in existing buildings and urban production.

In addition to the construction company Strabag, the Vienna University of Technology and the Institute of Property Research (IPRE) are also involved in the research. The aim of the research is to prepare a largely energy self-sufficient and CO2-neutral quarter with urban production, which – if successful – will integrate climate protection, security of supply and low energy costs in a completely new way.

Interim use of the barrel factory real laboratory

As part of the research use, the rooms in the shed roof hall (1,200 m2) and the former locksmith’s shop of the barrel factory (2,000 m2) will be rented out to innovative craft businesses as well as artists and creative professionals on a low-cost, low-threshold and temporary basis. Part of the space is expected to be used by the Strabag Kulturforum. But another part will be allocated on a small scale. The interim use will run for at least three years in total, but the individual uses can also be short-term.

There should be:

  • Artists’ studios / studios
  • Rehearsal and performance space
  • Craft workshops
  • Exhibition and event rooms

The project was also advised and supported by Kreative Räume Wien from the outset.
