Kollektiv Kaorle – A lively meeting place in Ottakring

As a multidisciplinary collective, Kollektiv Kaorle is committed to cultural and artisanal production and is actively involved in the revitalization of Grätzle. The cultural offerings for the neighborhood are enriched by a regular program.

The building complex at Ottakringer Straße 201 is just a five-minute walk from Ottakring U3 station, where the Kaorle collective has created a unique space for artistic and cultural diversity. The vacant activation of the former “Boogie Alm” with a focus on art and culture has created a new place for exchange, networking, creativity and joint design in Ottakring. In addition to the curated program, the location functions as a charming public meeting place for the neighbourhood.

Space activation for communal use and encounters

The property consists of a three-storey main building with a corner restaurant on the first floor, an inner courtyard and two adjoining workshop halls. It was formerly home to the “Boogie Alm” dance club. The premises are regularly used by the Kaorle collective with a varied program.

The association’s activities focus on cultural production, workshops, events, concerts and projects that promote cultural diversity. An additional focus is on the topic of handicraft production. The promotion of craftsmanship and creative expression manifests itself, for example, in the pottery workshop and an event room for concerts.

A Lido for Ottakring – More space for culture

The inner courtyard – the so-called “Lido” – serves as a community area, offers space to linger and is available to visitors as a consumption-free zone. However, there is also the opportunity to enjoy fresh drinks and snacks at the courtyard bar, as well as the occasional pop-up kitchen during events. The diverse program of events promotes creative exchange between different disciplines and strengthens the community. The building complex, including workshops and inner courtyard, is jointly managed.

“Creatives for Vienna – Making Spaces” by the Vienna Business Agency

The interim use at Ottakringerstraße 201 was announced as part of the competition “Creatives for Vienna – Making Spaces” 2022 together with the pilot project “Grätzelinitiative Ottakring” of the Vienna Business Agency, which aimed to expand the local offer and the sustainable development of local companies. In its third edition, the “Creatives for Vienna” competition invited the development of creative uses of space. A total of 139 concepts were submitted to the Vienna Business Agency by March 2023 and 15 projects were awarded EUR 15,000 each. In addition to concepts for own spaces, uses for four advertised spaces could also be developed and submitted.

Added value through creative impulses for the Grätzl

With the Lido, Ottakring has temporarily gained an important place for creativity, networking and knowledge transfer. As a non-profit association, the collective has managed to create a special place for exchange and culture and to develop a platform for joint creation by activating the space. Kaorle’s aim is to promote a vibrant and diverse community and strengthen the discourse on living together in everyday life.
